No. 1 Hillhouse, Yale University

The No. 1 Hillhouse Mansion holds local significance as a major work of architecture on one of the most significant historic streets in New Haven. The renovation and restoration of the building has provided the University’s Provost with a new state of the art office and conference center. Originally built in two phases, this Richardsonian-style building was converted and restored for the new Offices of the Provost of Yale University. Although the Historic nature of the Entry and the first floor Library were beautifully detailed, the rest of the building’s details were inconsistent. VBA restored the Entry and Library, now the Provost’s office, to reflect the original intentions, yet renovated the rest of the Interiors in a simple trim and paneled interior; sympathetic to the original aesthetic. No. 1 Hillhouse is the sister building to 370 Temple and are connected by a new $2.5 million “Connector” classroom building.
