The Yale Bowl, Yale University

Designed and built in 1914 by engineer Thomas Ferry, the Yale Bowl is the country’s second-oldest football stadium. Virtually untouched for 90 years, the Bowl’s mammoth concrete retaining walls, portals and seating areas had significantly deteriorated. VBA was retained by Yale University to restore the Bowl to its former glory as well as address ADA seating issues. The scope included extensive concrete repair, new cementitious renderings, waterproofing and new wood seating. VBA utilized all available historical material to ensure all aspects of the restoration were true to the original design. In addition to the restoration work, VBA also completed a masterplan study of the surrounding stadium’s grounds, which included adjacent soccer fields, field seating, and tennis courts. VBA designed a new entrance plaza and a new entrance building, complementing the various athletic fields and facilities around the Bowl.
