Davies Mansion, Yale University

Built in 1868, the John M. Davies Mansion is distinguished as the finest surviving example of early development in New Haven’s prestigious Prospect Hill area. In 1972 Yale University purchased the property which remained unoccupied and suffered from a severe fire in 1990. VBA designed a comprehensive reconstruction and restoration of this elaborate Second Empire structure. The exterior decorative wood trim, shingles, and portico were either restored or recreated to match the historic details. The deteriorated dormers and roof were restored and rebuilt. VBA also created the restoration standards and methodology for the restoration of the Mansion’s interior.
